Ratios tell how one number is related to another number.
A ratio may be written as A:B or A/B or by the phrase "A to B".
A ratio of 1:5 says that the second number is five times as large as the first.
The following steps will allow determination of a number when one number and the ratio between the numbers is given.
Example: Determine the value of B if A=6 and the ratio of A:B = 2:5
* Determine how many times the number A is divisible by the corresponding portion of the ratio. (6/2=3)
* Multiply this number by the portion of the ratio representing B (3*5=15)
* Therefore if the ratio of A:B is 2:5 and A=6 then B=15

A ratio is simply a proportional relationship between two things.
If 3 feet equals 1 yard, then 9 feet equals 3 yards
If 16 oz. equals 1 pound, then 32 oz. equals 2 pounds
If there are 3 blue marbles for every red marble in a bag, then 3/4 of the marbles are blue and 1/4 of the marbles are red. If there are 100 marbles in the bag, 75 are blue (3/4 of 100) and 25 are red (1/4 of 100).
It can be helpful any time you have to scale something. I fact, I use it often at the grocery store (If 12 cans of soda cost $3.00, and 18 cans cost $5.00, which is the better buy? Well, the 12 cans are $.25 each, while the 18 cans are about $.28 each, so I'll buy the 12 cans.)

well ratio is like how much of something to something else. for example, if there are 10 students and 2 teachers on a field trip the student-teacher ratio is 10:2. it can be helpful in life because if you're making rice, the water-rice ratio (i think these are the right measurements) is 1.5:1 (cups)

"relative size" is about the simplest way I can think of stating it. How large or whatever measure one quantity is in comparison to another. Division or percentage is all it really is.
A few examples might be as follows:
____is to ____ the same as ____ is to ____
pi is the ratio of the circumference of a circle to diameter.
Miles PER gallon
