i'm not an actor but i'm guessing they hit the gym just in case they get a role that's physically demanding. Its easier to get fatter than to get leaner. hehe That and probably going back to school would be a logical thing for actors to do.

Auditioning, taking classes, working out, working a day job, networking.
Plus, pretty much anything that any other person would do when they are unemployed. Each actor is different, and has different hobbies and interets. The good ones, however, spend just as much time looking for work as they would spend working a job.

The great majority go to work. Being an unemployed actor doesn't exempt anyone from the obligation to pay rent, bills, etc.

They are either looking for that next acting job or working a second job to pay the bills.
It's not easy. You have no time to sit around or go out and play. When you need to pay bills, you need to get out there and hustle. It's not uncommon for actors to go on cattle calls (auditions) in the morning hours and work as waiters and waitresses at night.
Harrison Ford was a carpenter when he wasn't acting. Did you know he initially turned down the role of Cowboy in American Graffiti because his carpentry work paid more? That, of course, was the role that lead to his role in Star Wars.

Well, I go to college and volunteer and work at a high school helping kids who want to become better perfomers.
