I think that for most people, it's a fad that will eventually be replaced by something else. It used to be people would have simple web pages and update them from time to time. Then the blog concept started taking over. Now there's myspace. I would imagine that by the time it becomes so commonplace for someone to have a MySpace site, people will eventually get tired of the novelty of it and seek out something new.
I can see where you're getting at when it comes to some people spending too much time on it. I notice, for example, that you can invite people to become your friend, and I've seen examples of people on that site who have literally hundreds of thousands of friends. How can such a person keep track of them all, let alone find the time to invite them all in the first place?
By contrast, I, for example, have only two friends on MySpace so far--I'm using my MySpace site mainly to promote my music--and I intend to limit my invitations to big-name people in the music industry who have accounts on MySpace themselves and whose music has made a professional impact on me.
So to answer your question, I'd say people who use MySpace excessively are just leaving life to chance, whereas I'm being proactive with my own MySpace site.
