Once upon a time, in a ancient myth, a knight in shining armor was eating spaghetti in a cavern. Then, in the single, faint ray of moonlight that shone into the cavern's entrance, he looked at the hard object he had just bitten down upon. It was a wedding ring. Upon realizing that one of the meatballs in his spaghetti had actually been a human finger, he was so appalled that he became dizzy from lack of oxygen. But he recovered, and not only finished his spaghetti, but devoured all the garlic bread, as well.

Summers on Uncle Larry's farm were amazing. I wish I could go back to the good old days when we would sit in front of a fire and my older cousin, Matt, would tell us myths. He would also tell us family stories but I never knew what was true and what wasn't. The funniest story I ever heard is his supposed story of what happened at my aunt and uncle's wedding. Matt told me this when we were exploring a cavern behind a waterfall. Matt told me that when my aunt and uncle got married, the wedding ring got lost. Nobody could remember where it was, but finally someone remembered the groom's mother had made spaghetti the night before when the ring was on the counter. The ring was in the spaghetti! Well time was running low and they needed the ring. They asked for volunteers to get the ring and some old lady on oxygen volunteered. That wouldn't work. Then all of the sudden, a man working across the street dressed as a night in shining armor heard the commotion. He offered to get the wedding ring. He got the wedding ring and they were married and lived happily ever after.

As I'm sitting here, turning my wedding ring over and over in my hand, I can't help but think that living "happily ever after" is nothing but a myth. When Sherry and I were married five years ago, she told me that I was her rock, her source of strength, her knight in shining armor. A week ago, when she moved out, she said she needed space - our relationship left her feeling like she was constantly gasping for oxygen. Now, I just wander aimlessly around our small house that, without her, feels like more like a cavern than a home, and my meals alone consist mostly of spaghetti because it's the only thing I know how to cook. In a few minutes, when I go to bed, I know that sleep won't come easily. I'll just lie awake, replaying in my mind the good times she and I had together, and wondering if I'll ever see her again.

The myth of the spaghetti wedding ring is one of the most charming stories of all. A handsome knight in shining armor rescues a fair maiden who has fallen asleep in an enchanted cavern that has no oxygen but only sleeping gas. Once she is revived, the princess has to break the spell forever by marrying the first man she sees. She and the young knight rush to wed, and he has only the wedding ring of a loop of spaghetti to begin a life with her where they live happily ever after.

I was reading a myth about a knight in shining armor who lived in a cavern. One day, the cavern got blocked up with rocks so he ran out of oxygen. I was nearly done reading when my spaghetti exploded and knocked the book and my wedding ring into the trash.

Well, it's not interesting, but it sort of makes sense.

It is a myth that there is a knight in shining armour waiting to rescue you from the cavern of your depression and put a wedding ring on your finger, so that you will cook his spaghetti for the rest of his life, as though you are responsible for the oxygen and sustenance of his wretched existence.

It is not a myth that men would actually risk their lives to scour an abandoned cavern for their wives wedding ring. Agood meal of hearty spaghetti for energy, a tank of oxygen for the mission and your toad can become a night in shining armor
