In the late 1880's Ohio State was primarily an agricultural school devoted, mainly, to the study of cow flatulence (a major problem in the Columbus area that continues to this day). They had a great deal of difficulty attracting students as most of the intelligent people of character were going to Michigan.
They began offering potential students $2 just to take the entrance exam (which consisted of just 2 questions - "what is your name?" and "what is your favorite color?"). The locals began to say that, if you went to OSU, you received one dollar for each eye you had or "a buck an eye" This began the tradition of calling OSU students "Buckeyes".

A buckeye is a sorry *** nut from Ohio. Also, a dessert that consist of butter, peanut butter and powdered sugar. You take the dessert buckeye and dipped it most of it in some chocolate. I hate some damn buckeye but I love the dessert version though.
