You can't drive and read a map at the same time. That's what wives/girlfriends are for.

I don't think that maps are particularly intimidating to men, or women for that matter. It takes a particular skill to read them. It's the asking for directions that I hate. I'm dyslexic and my husband makes me ask for directions. He does this knowing full well that I won't understand what is said to me in return so he stands behind me and listens to what they say. Oddly enough, I am an excellent map reader. I can and do navagate on every trip that we take. I read rail maps/schedules, road maps, everything like that. My husband can read a map, but he can't read and drive naturally. That's where I come in. I don't do left and right, but North, South, East and West? That's easy!

How can something that a man wouldn't consider even using be intimidating. It's not intimidation it's arrogance - they think they know everything which is why they believe they don't need a map nor do they need to read instructions.

i know what you mean! i always need directions on yahoo maps when i go somewhere new, but my husband is like, gosh, why do you need that? just go, you'll find it! and if he gets lost, THEN he'll ask me to look at the map. it's like, just look at the map the first time! i bet it's a masculine thing, finding places and driving there without a map. for me, i just want to get there safely and not get lost! lol, i wish my husband would use a map more!

That is a generalized question. I personally am not intimidated by maps and rely on them at work to help me locate locations throughout the city.

We prefer to find our way on our own. So we don't mind taking a wrong turn, because it's just an opportunity to find out what was down the "wrong" way.
The other thing is that on our own, maps are fine. But if we believe we should go one way and a woman is nagging us that we don't know where we're going, we feel very insulted.

Actually, women have more trouble with maps than men! Men are natuarally adapted to reading maps, and they can read it upside down. Women's mind's aren't wired for reading maps so well. Try turning your map upside down and navigating, you'll find (as a woman) it's very very difficult. Go on, i dare ya!

I got over that feeling a very long time ago.If i am heading ti an unfamiliar location it does not intimidate me at all to use a map, nor does it intimidate me to stop and ask directions either.

To men? To ME! I never learned how to read a map!

Well I for one find them difficult to read. I usually will ask someone how to get somewhere. I will not always trust my reading of the map.
