i have just finished watching it and i didn't really understand the ending could someone please explain it to me, if you have watched it and understood it

Plus allan i agree with your theory but why then at the end when they get back home are they both dead?

All the people are in the church because they believe they are the only people left after a nuclear holocaust... They burnt the child because they believed her to be a witch (anyone the female leader of the church people didn't like would be called a witch and burnt).
The main female character looking for her daughter allowed the evil inside her body so that it could enter the church and desicrate it... Therefore allowing the evil from the little girl in to take revenge on the people that burnt her. The old lady was saved at the end as it was her daughter that was burnt alive... And as the main female actress leaves she turns to her and says 'in the eyes of the child her mother is god'.

the town of religious freaks burned the little girl by accident and then she got her revenge (the reasons for this are not clear but apparently her hate was to intense that it became somehow spiritual). The religious freaks were in hiding in the church ever since, in a sort of netherworld where they are always running from monsters (the monsters were created by the little girl) when they killed the main character a drop of her blood touched the floor and that desecrated the church, the only protection. The church melted and the little girl appeared and killed everyone. The little girl let the main character and her daughter go because they helped her get revenge. I think the daughter of the main character was the old witch-looking ladys daughter.

at the beginning the mother and daughter were riding and ran off the road:(at this point they actually died) but instead of the mother and daughter going to eternal peace they were in limbo(between heaven and hell). the daughter was taken to hell and the mother went to save her.to cut a long movie short . when they returned back to the road (notice there were no other cars on the road but theirs) they pulled up to the house they did not find the father and he could not find them upon search. finally they went to peace. the father was still alone.ahhhhhhhhh so sad but true.
