What exactly does it mean? I asked if she was gothic because she dyed her hair to black and cut it short and wears a bow and she said i am considered imao.

Your daughter is not saying "IMAO" she is referring to being "EMO". EMO is short for the word Emotional. It is also a type of music that the teens who like drama tend to listen too.
A good website to find out what your child is saying, or the current usage of slang is http://www.urbandictionary.com. It has saved me SEVERAL times from embarrassing myself in front of my daughter. It also keeps her from trying to bluff her way out of saying something.

You seem like a concerned parent. Let me help you out, first of all it is called emo. The term refers to disturbed children or teens who wear all black (almost gothic culture) and embrace the satanic symbols and style. Also, it could be for the attention, but you are in a serious ditch. Emos, they are usually dark, lonely, and slit their wrists. It's a very scary, yet unusual thing. Emos do not like other people, in fact they are willing to kill, terrorize, vandalize, and screw anyone that gets in their way. Emos have their heads down, and always have an emotionless expression on their face. You and your daugther need some counseling. Maybe it's the style, NO. It's a disturbance and she needs serious help. She may not even be alive next year if you don't talk to her soon. If she tells you to go away (like most teens are prompt to do) call for help. A trusted best friend is most likely right around the corner. Other than that, good luck and I hope your daughter turns back to normal.

EMO.. it's short for emotional. Not gothic, btu close. They listen to Blue October, Beck, and other EMo bands. These days it's just a fad started by some upcoming and popular bands. Don't worry... Most emo kids just wear thrift shop clothes, scuffed up shoes, die their black and listen to an IPOD constantly.. you can also find them at many coffe shops.... they sit around and make fun of all the preps then go home and listen to music for hours on end..

I wonder what her definition is.
Anyway it basically means she is trendy now.
Although the acceptable trendy. The "alternative" trendy, not preppy trendy. Darker and/or brighter clothes. (think black, bright green) Generally no pastel colors and lots of weird pretentious accesories.
Especially those long plastic beads.
