Experiment. For example, somebody asks you 'What's the sound of one hand clapping?' Well, off you go with a tape-recorder, find a guy with only one hand, and tell him to clap. Am I missing something, here?

Philosophy: a deep and meaningful look into the who's what's why's and wherefore?! That's what it means to me; but I guess it's all about the view from which you see things; and it's a different view, person to person!
I am not sure I can equate with the hand clapping Q; but perhaps a selection of importance's and how it will enhance your survival in life; just the ability to think with questions and answers!

Philosophy and logic's worst enemy is assumption,in the case you mention a little application of thought to the question broadens it and opens up possibilities.

Naturally you assume the employment of a one handed person to carry out the experiment. Supposing we asked the additional question is moving one hand and slapping it against the other stationary a one hand clap. Therefore moving both hands towards each other and slapping them together a two handed clap.

This gives a different slant on the original question - is this philosophy?

Well, some people take it literally, some don't.

But if 42 is the answer to every question, then one better knows how to ask questions properly.

At the end, if the questions and answers do not provide clarity to the human experience, then why do we engage in it? We just have to look at things and ask, what is the real point here?

There are many things to which there is no answer and experimentation is not possible. Even the question: "What is the nature of truth" or "What is knowledge" produce no certain answers. Whilst an empiricist approach works for many things it falls short on many more important things. Whether there is a God, for example, is not going to be proved by experiment.

okay i can't be bothered answering your question cos it's too deep and it's too late so i'll go onto the one-hand clapping nonsense. there are two solutions to it:

a) the sound of one hand clapping is exhibited by slapping your fingers against your palm

or

b) a clap is defined by two hands slapping together, ergo, a one handed clap is impossible: it does not fit the definiton

oh yeah and philosphy is deeper than experiment and rhetorical questions. so no

You are missing nothing what so ever. "The Devils Advocate." rarely does.Except simiplicity. My neighbour has one hand, we often go to plays, musical performances, and the like. When ever applause may be required he slaps his thigh, with his one hand, it makes a greater sound than two hands clappig, But it is only one hand clapping. Zen?

Philosophy is basically a study of unsolved problems of all sciences. That's why the Ph.D. is a research degree. They study the unsolved mysteries of that particular science.

If philosophy has any purpose it is just to wonder and question and a little amazed at one or two of the answers to what is just a question!

"Only the wise are able to raise questions, it's up to the fool to answer them"
(Your experiment doesn't qualify as a question. No fool would answer that)

You are missing something, the question you pose is one from Budhism not philosophy,
"I think therefore I am" - how do you use your tape recorder to resolve that?
