I like gerbils, because they are not really nocturnal, but hamsters and mice are cool too.

Depends on what you're looking for out of a pet.

Rats are very affectionate, easily tamed, easy to handle, and very intelligent. They must be kept in same-sex pairs, however, and they need lots of space and toys.

Mice are very hyper, but also easily tamed and intelligent. They're harder to handle and don't typically show much affection. They require a smaller space, and a moderate amount of toys to keep them entertained. They too must be kept in same-sex pairs.

Syrian hamsters (Teddy Bear hamsters) can be affectionate and entertaining pets. They're harder to hand-tame but fairly easy to handle, but it also varies widely. Ones from breeders (not petstores/Petsmart/Petco) are more calm and more likely to enjoy being handled. They need a moderately sized cage (with a wheel) and lots of toys to prevent destructive cage-chewing. They CANNOT be housed with other animals. They're highly aggressive towards other hamsters.

Dwarf hamsters are hyper, but entertaining. They LOVE wheels. They don't require a large cage, but lots of toys are necessary. They're harder to hand-tame, but once they are, they typically enjoy being handled. They can be kept in same sex pairs but it isn't required.

Gerbils are very entertaining and must be kept in same-sex pairs. They need a fairly large cage, a moderate amount of toys, and lots of bedding to burrow in. They're harder to handle (like mice), but are generally easy to hand-tame.

In my experience, as far as tendency to bite is concerned... (order of least likely to bite, to most likely to bite):

Rats
Gerbils
Mice
Syrian Hamsters
Dwarf Hamsters

I have pet fancy mice, In a mousery. about 150 not including babies. I get alot of enjoyment out of them. If you decide on mice, get 2 females, for compionship. Males have an odor in their urine that's stronger than females. I also have 1 rat that is a biter!. I adopted her from a friend that was tired of getting bit by her. I have been bitten by her, and it's very painful. Not all rats are this mean, But if you get one, get a young one. That way you can tame it properly. Good luck with whatever you decide on.

Gerbils! They are friendly, they don't pee as much as other rodents(so they don't smell as bad and only need a monthly cage cleaning), plus they like to play during the day time. Just make sure they have a tonne of stuff to chew on!
