Many of the American colonies were settled by religious dissenters like the Puritans who settled in the Massachusetts colony. The Catholics were given the land for Maryland, the Quakers in Pennsylvania - etc., etc.

I believe the colonies were ruled by govenors with an assembly and council - each being similar to the English Parliament.

I think in the North there was trade due to ports like New York and Boston which made for a wealthy merchant class. In the South there were large plantations for cotton and tobacco. I think the colonists also had to import manufactured good from Britain. But go to Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colonial_America

As for social structures, they varied from state to state. In New England there were mostly small farms but as time went by there was a wealthy merchant class. See the Wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colonial_America

England was despotic - it had a mad Monarch who demanded that he be obeyed. Money - taxation was resented. Many of the colonists hd escaped mother England because of persecution they didn't need it reinstated in America.
