I think it depends on you. If there are specific activities for the older children, you can make it work. After school, be sure the older kids have time to really let loose and then maybe have indoor activities/homework time. Older kids may also be willing to help with the younger ones who have been with you all day. You can make it what you want with thought and planning.

It is going to be tough. School age kids already think they are too old for day care. The key is keeping them busy. Never let them get bored, just like your little ones. If they are only there after school, consentrate on homework. They can help each other...older kids helping the younger with their work. That way they will not feel like they are at a day care, but in an after school study group. Let them have a free day as well, let them help plan activities . Kids are more apted to want to participate in something they helped plan. Good Luck

Well, I work part-time at a daycare, and I usually work with pre-schoolers. It depends what you mean by tough. The younger ones are more stressful because they have too much energy and don't like to listen, however I prefer that age group. I have had some experience working with school age, and I find them to be boring. You can't interact with them as much as the younger ones. Try setting up some arts and crafts or something, I know that's what a lot of my school-agers liked to do. The rest of them will probably just choose to do homework or play on their own.

I believe it is a hard job and I appreciate individuals who do those types of jobs. But if you don't have heart to do it, maybe you should change carreers.
