It is called a fuel sending unit and it is attached to your fuel pump in the fuel tank. But the Gage may be bad. Sometimes you can tap on the dash near your Gage a few times and it will start working again when the key is on. That's because the gage's contacts may be corroded. When you tap on it and shake things up a bit it will some times make contact again. The sending unit can be removed and tested.Make sure you do this or have it done when you have 1/4 of a tank or less.Or the tank will be very heavy and your mechanic may cuss you under his breath. When it is removed. take a volt meter and switch it to OHMS.Symbol looks like a U. Put one end of the probe on your volt meter to one terminal on the plug for your sending unit. Then put the other on the other terminal. Have someone move the float arm up and down slowly. You should have a low number when the float is completely down, and should rise to a high number when moved the other way. If this doesn't happen then Yes your sending unit ? Fuel pump should be replaced. It's all one unit so the pump has to be replaced with it. And yes it can be expensive.

I wouldn't try to repair it. I would replace it. I bought a new fuel tank for my 88 Chevy C1500 pick-up truck at Autozone for about $150 and that included a replacement lock ring and gasket set for the electric fuel pump and sending unit. I changed it myself in just a little more than an hour. But don't make the mistake I made. There was two different sizes of fuel tanks listed for my truck, a 26 gallon tank and a 34 gallon tank. I bought the wrong tank on the first trip.

First look for an access panel above the tank. That may give you a clear shot at the float. I know it was there in older vehicles. If that is it, try JCWhitney catalogue, or a parts store. Can save megabucks.

On my 93 F150, float and fuel pump are easy to get to, once you drop the tank. Read all the safety tips like non-sparking tools, no electrics, disconnect battery and stay well-grounded with no pilot-flames and of course no smoking!
