I'm not sure there is a real good way to do it...

Empty it, and bribe as many of your friends to help you as you can get...

I recommend beer for the bribe.

I presume this is a water tank, empty water via a hose pipe OUTSIDE then disconnect all pipes after making sure the water supply has been turned off before hand. the easy est way if it's a plastic tank is with a jig saw, if it's a metal tank you can still use a jig saw with metal cutting blades, or a grinder wear proper safety goggles and gloves. If you are going to use a grinder on a metal tank make sure there is no flammable material as there is a lot of sparks. If in doubt leave it to the professionals.

Is it a fish tank, water tank or an oil tank? Is it something you want to keep intact or just get rid of?

There are professional services that will remove water tanks or oil tanks for a fee. I wouldn't recommend doing this on your own, unless you know what you're getting yourself into.

Oil tanks will still have risidual oil in them that might leak or cause environmental implications. Disposing of them is another issue. Most companies remove the all the oil and then saw them into managable pieces.

If it is a water tank that you don't need then you could disconnect everything and hacksaw it yourself. If you need to keep in intact, remove all removable parts and have a few friends help you move it. Same for a fish tank or other tank... try using the furniture moving site below for tips on moving large objects.

I am confused. What is a loft space doing on the ground floor?
If you are serious cut it in third with an angle grinder. Angle grinders are VERY dangerous I would suggest that you get someone else to do the work.

If it was a water tank then drain it out, and cut it into smaller pieces. It wont be easy to do but you dont really have a choice. If it contained oil or something else, then dont mess around and get a company in to drain and clean it and dispose of the waste

You will probably have to cut it up with an angle grinder(9"). Make sure you wear a good quality mask (as well as goggles and gloves) as the galvanising can be lethal when it burns.

Is it a fish tank, a water storage tank, a gasoline/diesel tank??
Is it metal or plastic?
Whichever it is empty it first.
Then you can either use a sling (maybe using a tow strap or motorcycle tie downs) and come-along (winch) or if it's light enough after emptying, lift it down manually.
