Kids, grow up. First of all you don't run out and audition with no previous experience. Next, you need to get into school plays, then into community theater. Next, you need connections int he business. Next, you need to take acting classes or workshops. Next, you need talent. Next, you need an agent. Good luck. And to tonalc, I bet to differ. YES you DO need CONNECTIONS in the business. Show biz isn't about WHAT you know, but WHO you know! Been there.

Wow, a lot of discouraging responses are on here.
First off, you do not need to take acting classes or workshops. Too many people will try to sell you on acting classes when they know very little about you. Yes, acting classes are important to any actor for a successful career because just like any career you need to keep up with whats new.
Some people have natural talent. I say try a few auditions, get a feel for it. Some people spend thousands on acting classes, only to find they hated the audition process.
Get feedback from casting agents, that way you will know what you need classes in. You may decide acting is not the thing for you.
I say get your feet a little wet and go from there. I sent a client of mine out on a Pepsi Audition a few years back. He had no exp. in acting, modeling, etc. He got the job because he had what they were looking for and he was very trainable. It took a few takes to get the commerical done, but he did it. He decided he did not like the negatives with the acting world and has since moved on to print modeling.
The only money he spent with me was a small manager fee for getting him the pepsi deal. He tried the acting, didn't like it and saved himself money.

Better question would be to ask what is needed to break into acting, period.
You can't expect to jump into a business near the top of the food chain. EVEN if you managed to get into an audition, the one with the skills has the best chance to get a part.
Join a local theater group, Same with drama clubs in schools. If they don't have one, START ONE! Improve your skill set, get practice performing, get seen, and THEN look for auditions.
The theater groups know where and when movie auditions occur.
It's not that the path you describe for you and your cousin never happens, but that kind of luck is RARE. Prepare yourself and help MAKE your own luck.

Take acting lessons for the next ten or 12 years. By then you MAY be ready to audition.
Good luck.

Kitty is mostly correct; you do need to learn how to act and have some talent, and it's best to have an agent. However, you don't necessarily need "connections" in the business.
