Freshwater Biomes
•Rivers, streams, and lakes.
•They provide drinking water and food for humans as well as other organisms.
•These biomes are easily polluted.
Marine Biomes
•These biomes are found making up the ocean.
•There are four distinct marine biomes.
•They are characterized by their depth and distance from the shore.
•Examples: Intertidal Zone, Neritic Zone, Open-Sea Zone, and the Deep Sea Zone.
Intertidal Zone
•The area called the beach.
•The most difficult zone for organisms to live in.
•Animals: clams, barnacles, snails, starfish, and sea urchins.
•Plants: various species of seaweed attached to rocks.
Neritic Zone
•Found between the low tide line and the edge of the open sea.
•Animals: turtles, lobsters, crabs, flounder, sting rays, and sponges.
•Plants: Large seaweed (kelp).

12:37b Aquatic Biomes
Open -Sea Zone
•The large open area of the ocean to the depth of about 600 feet.
•The microscopic phytoplankton carries on between 80 and 90% of the earth’s photosynthesis.
•Animals: whales, dolphins, large birds, sharks, and many species of bony fish.
•Nutrient poor causing slow phytoplankton growth.
Deep-Sea Zone
•An area of high pressure, cold temperatures, and darkness.
•Animals: gulper eels, giant squid, zooplankton (microscopic animals), and sea cucumbers.
•No plant life.
Estuaries
•Found at the boundary between the fresh water and salt water.
•Examples: salt marshes, mangroves swamps, lagoons, and mouths of rivers.
•Estuaries are the most productive of all aquatic biomes. Animals and plants must be tolerant of both salt and fresh water.
•Animals: shrimp, crabs, many fish, and birds.
•Plants: Mangrove
