We don't have assigned seats in our homes (unless you count "Dad's chair"), so the concept is one students have to learn. Granted, they had all through elementary school to learn it. It most likely has to do with the fact that middle schoolers are beginning to understand the dynamics of power positions. They know that there are so many things a teacher can do to "control" them, so they test these boundaries.

I would tell them that it is a privilege to be able to choose where you sit. If they can prove that they can sit where you assigned them first, then have them make a list of 3-4 people they could work by and not talk. It is amazing how some kids wont write their friends down. I was the first time i did that. I would say at the end of the year, if they were good for the most part, let them choose their seat. Good Luck! I teach 5th grade and its always a battle.

Why does it matter? This kind of nonsense is why I changed majors in college. I was a education major. I assume you are a teacher. This really confirms my argument about why I decided against teaching. There is too much pedagogy and not enough academics in schools today. Lighten up and realize that there are more important things to get upset about.

when i was an 8th grader we didnt sit in our assigned seats because we wanted to sit next to our friends. You should be stern with them and tell them they will get punished next time you find them in the wrong seat.
hope i could help!

There are a lot of parents that don't teach or practice structure so some kids are not used to having to do the same things everyday. They're used to a home without order and they usually get away with murder.

1. To mess with you (we love to do that, by the way)
2. They're bored.
3. They're feeling fidgety.
4. They want to sit by their friends.
5. Just to do what you told them not to do to feel rebellious.

It seems that all of the above would be a great answer, so I'll choose letter "E", all of the above.
