Usually 6 years. Almost all Veterinary schools in America accept student who have 2 years of University training (although there are some which accept students with only 45 credit hours).
My son is a vet, completed 2 years of biology at George Washington University, and then went to Cornell for 4 years to get his DVM. His daughter (my grandaughter) just completed 2 years of sciences at UC-Irvine and just started her D.V.M at Colorado State, and everybody in her class has only 2 or 3 years of University. She was worried that because she didn't have a degree she would be out of place. But she wasn't.

First you get your undergraduate degree (4 years). Then you go to vet school. Another 4 years. So thats 8 years, minimum. Good luck!

It requires 4 years of college and an additional 4 years of veterinary medicine. Internship or residency credits are not required but are offered to achieve advanced qualification or specialty certification.

*2-4 years of internship if you want to specialize in pathology, internal medicine, animal dentistry, nutrition, ophthalmology, surgery, radiology, preventive medicine, laboratory animal medicine, oncology, dermatology, anesthesiology, neurology, cardiology, or exotic small-animal medicine.
