Because you'll get all ages of trick or treaters, you need to be sure it isn't so scary that the four year olds have nightmares. I like to put a CD player outside and play spooky music, like "Classics from the Crypt." If you have trees along your sidewalk, hang ghosts made from sheer fabric (it floats better) with tattered edges, and a few bats on elastic so they swoop. Decorate the front of your house with pumpkins, corn stalks, bales of straw - then dress up like a scarecrow and sit on the bale of straw, kind of limp and lopsided. Put the candy in a basket next to you. The moment that you move, when the kids are just walking by to the door - THAT'S the scare.

build a coffin out of wood and put it on the front lawn with some decorations. Sit (lay) inside and wait till the kids come up the drive and jump out and scare them. A fog machine, spotlights and scary Halloween CD are always fun, too. Or you could dress up like a scarecrow and sit on the porch. Scare the kids when they come up to the door.
