Yes they certainly can. Besides that there are some really nice tricks bad people can play with unsecured networks, that the firewall mentioned won't help.
Remember that you are transmitting, and that can be picked up by any receiver in the area. So with the right equipment/software someone can see everything you type.
If your going to use this kind of network get the firewall to try to prevent them attacking your computer directly, and be VERY careful of what you send out. If you are use VPN or a secure web site then the conversation is encrypted, but most other times it is not.

let me give a complete answer.the message which you've seen is a note that your operating system (windows) send for you and purpose is you to know your information might be in reach of other
people and it doesn't mean that you've been hacked . also there
is a check box that you can say to windows not to show you that
message again.
but about network :
basically any network or website which you are a member of it
has a data base and a program which is written by some programmers is running and in fact you are working with that program and when you upload a file or send information for a site or on a network this program send this information to database.
but how hackers might access this information?
if the program which send information to data base doesn't be
a secure program hackers can find a way to data base and so
your information and in fact all information in data base will be
available for hackers.
explaining how can hacker do this need more time.
I think I could answer your question and hope these information to be helpful.

Dr house is an idiot you dont need software to break into someone's wireless pc. So yes to answer your question i would place a firewall and a good one if you use wireless. dont use 2 of them thinking that will give you double protection as that will only cause difficulties later.
good luck

relies upon what you recommend by employing 'connect nicely' Is the signal capacity low? Then perhaps you in basic terms have a crappy router. or you're easily attempting to connect at the same time with your neighbours router by employing twist of destiny. Is internet in basic terms sluggish? perhaps there is something else on your community employing up bandwidth, downloading torrents for instance. also make positive this is secured, in case you dont password take care of it, perhaps your neighbour is eating your bandwidth. Edit: i have said with my abode community, regardless of if I provide up torrents from downloading, i prefer to reboot my router before my internet hastens. i guess till the relationship is reset my wan port is being bombarded by employing peer requests or something. maximum routers, from what I easily have said, look to provide priority to ethernet. So it would want to be that one of those difficulty has decreased your bandwidth, in spite of the undeniable fact that this is in basic terms fairly noticable once you take advantage of the on the spot. in case you dl torrents, try rebooting your router after final the torrent customer and see if that fixes your difficulty. Does it decrease out plenty? there is perhaps something on your position causing interference. a lot of wiring, or perhaps units like microwaves can create a mild EM container which will disrupt the wifi signal. each and every time I turn my microwave on, my on the spot cuts out. Are you interior an same room because the router? some places have thick walls/flooring, with metallic helps in them, and easily make it demanding for the wifi signal to head by. combine that with any of the above and also you're fortunate to get a respectable connection by one wall.

There are some who will pick up on your unsecured network.. Sleazy people, hackers and want to be greats. Heck any kid can hack. I wouldn't worry about it too much, most of these hackers are just pimpled faced kids who couldn't get a date if their life depended on it;

It's possible for someone to hack into your computer even if you have a secured network but it's much harder. Just be careful where you go.
