Chris=Chelsea+4
Bill=2*Chris
Chris + Chelsea + Bill = 8*Chelsea
Now substitute:
(Chelsea +4)+(Chelsea)+2*(Chelsea+4)=8*Chelsea
Next, combine like terms:
4*Chelsea+12=8*Chelsea
Now solve:
12=4*Chelsea
Chelsea=3
Chris=7
Bill=14
Done.

Chris - 4 = Chelsea, Bill = 2 X Chris, Chris + Chelsea + Bill = 8 X Chelsea.

Chris + (Chris - 4) + [2 X Chris] = 8 (Chris - 4)

4 Chris - 4 = 8 Chris - 32

28 = 4 Chris

7 = Chris
Bill = 14
Chelsea = 3

7+4 = 3 <--Chris is 4 years older than Chelsea.
14 = 2 X (7) <--Bill is twice as old as Chris.
7 +(14) + (3) = 8 X (3) <--All of their ages = 8 times Chelseas age?

start out this kind of problem by assigning the variables

k=chris age
c=chelsea age
b=bill age

now just write the phrases in the question as algebra phrases

chris 4 years older than chelsea (k=c+4)
bill twice as old as chris (b=2*k)
all ages equal 8 times chelsea (k+c+b=8*c)

so, there are the equations

looks like substituting to get all k's would work out alright

equation one becomes
k=c+4
c=k-4

equation two becomes
b=2k

substituting into the last equation
k+c+b=8*c
k+(k-4)+2k=8*(k-4)
k+k-4+2k=8k-32
4k-4=8k-32
-4k=-28
k=7
b=14
c=3

I did that quickly so you should go over it carefully and check the math

also, you should always substitute the answer back into the long equation as a check if you have time

good luck

and, some of us sit around in real life and set up algebra equations as part of our job, trying to solve problems

its a good living and a good fit for some people

the word is usually means equal (=) - knowing this helps with percents also.
C = Ch + 4; B = 2C; C + Ch + B = 8Ch
Then substitute.
B = 2(Ch + 4); (Ch + 4) + Ch + 2(Ch + 4) = 8Ch
4Ch + 8 = 8Ch
8 = 4Ch
Chelsea = 2
substitue that back in. B = 2(2 + 4)
B = 4 + 8
B = 12
substitute these values back into Chris's first problem
C = (2) + 4
Chris = 6
Does this work?
Chris(6) + Chelsea(2) + Bill(12) = 8(Chelsea-2)
well, it should work out.....i can't see all my work on this screen to check it better. :)

a = chris
b = chelsea
c = bill

a = b + 4
c = 2a

a + b + c = 8b

c = 2(b + 4)

(b + 4) + b + (2b + 8) = 8b
b + 4 + b + 2b + 8 = 8b
4b + 12 = 8b
-4b = -12
b = 3

a = 3 + 4 = 7
b = 3
c = 2(7) = 14

There ages are 7, 3, and 14
