I think every nation has people who like and dislike Americans. Media probably has a big role in it.

If you find Americans "well-mannered and articulate" then you sure haven't met many! They are without doubt the exception NOT the rule. While there are many Americans who try hard to show proper manners, respect for others and have a minimum of real education, the vast majority do NOT.
As a group they tend to be among the most ignorant, antagonistic, racist, hate-filled, ill-mannered and outright rude race on the face of the Earth. There is no other group I have ever met who hold such strong and ridged opinions of subjects about which they know almost nothing than Americans. (If you don't believe me just check some of the questions and answers regarding "immigration," "current affairs" or anything at all dealing with race, religion, foreigners, etc.)
What is worse, for a nation which pretends to be a "superpower" they are unbelievably ignorant about the world around them. In a recent survey, a majority of high school graduates could not even find France on a world map! Over 85% of high school students could not name the leaders of the United States closest neigbours, Canada and Mexico! (But I bet you a majority could have answered correctly where to buy a bong or fake ID!) Just name me ONE other country with that level of blinding ignorance, anywhere in the world!
As a person with dual nationality, both Canadian and Mexican, I have seen how they act in both countries as well as at home and they are, as a group, extremely NASTY!
(with exceptions as I have noted!)

The well mannered and articulate ones probably typically know that this country is inundated with problems. We have a bigger drug problem, a bigger abortion problem, a bigger national debt, a bigger wealth disparity, more foul language, and more abusive behavior here than in most nations. We have had two Presidents in a row who seem to be compulsive liars. The biases against the poor are strong but denied and hidden by the government. If it weren't for the media, we would perhaps be Communist by now, but public uproars on account of a strong media has been a big help.
Thank you for appreciating great Americans. We know the problems with our nation and are willing to face it. That is a good step toward recovery. God bless you and your nation. :))

As an American, I can honestly say, I don't see that. Are you sure you haven't gotten that from the BBC, or CNN? Sounds like more anti-US propoganda. Man, Now BBC and CNN are telling people that even WE hate OURSELVES? Uh-Oh, better get a Democratic president in the White House quick!.
Oh, but if you seriously know people that say that they don't like themselves, recommend therapy, to include NO BBC OR CNN coverage. :0)

Americans each have their own individual issues. they are people. I'm sure the lebonese and chinese peopel have heir own issues. Just like the English have issues. It's called being Human. We have problems and things we have to deal with and hangups. We also have a palstic box where we end up talking aout our poblems to Billions of strangers. You sound like you are picking up on that. Yeah, we are pretty cool but you are picking up on milllions of individual complaints and issues and baggage and lumping them as n entire nation. There may even be some international baggage. Heck, I think we have all of Delta here! Yeah, even I have my hangups. I just hope they don't get caught in baggage claim. I'd hate for my dirty laundryt to get caught in Nepal!

If you were living in the desert cooking your food over camel dung, would you not be jealous of Americans living the good life?
They blame Americans for their standard of living instead of their corrupt leaders.

Americans are egocentric. Its not about you, its about us being full or ourselves and ignorant to the rest of the world. Not ALL of us are like this! Just the majority, which isn't very reassuring I realize. But, please don't generalize all of us.
