I had a tooth filled about a month ago and I think the filling messed with a nerve in my tooth. The tooth is sensitive to cold and will hurt if someone is scraped against it in a certain spot. What can be done about this?

you do not have to be in pain after a filling go back to the dentist and have him fix this if he says he can't find another dentist. I'm not sure why but it is hard to find a sympathetic dentist if you find one they are a rare jewel. It took me twenty years to figure this out after several painful visits and shoddy dental work.

The filling that they replaced was probably deep. It could calm down on it's own and be fine and that could take up to several months. It did for me on some. (I'm a dental assistant) The filling could be a little too high also. When they fill, sometimes it gets overfilled and you can't really tell when your numb or sometimes at all. The response of the tooth will be cold sensitivity and sensitivity to biting, sometimes only on hard things. You should try avoiding that side for a couple of days. If it doesn't calm down, go in and tell them to check the bite. They might adjust the filling, but don't worry, they're not grinding down your tooth. A lot of patients think that. After you've had that done, if it doesn't calm down in a week or so, you might be headed for a root canal and that doesn't mean that it's your dentists fault. That tooth was probably just teetering on the edge of needing one and the act of replacing the filling was enough to send it over the edge.

It is absolutely normal for a tooth to be overly sensative after a filling. This can last anywhere from a couple of weeks up to a couple of months.

Try using sensodyne tooth paste, or it could have abcessed. If the sensodyne doesn't work, try an antibiotic. It might need a root canal.

Sounds like you need a root canal. Either that or you are getting an infection, call your dentist.
