Why are there so many old songs about lemon trees?

is it some culture thing? what significance does lemon tree have?

I grew up listening to and watching Peter, Paul & Mary. I've heard the Lemon Tree song by Fool's Garden, as well, but am not familiar with any other songs with a reference.

I don't know of any others besides the Peter Paul and Mary tune. I mean that's the recording I remember most; it was also recorded by lots of other people, including Harry Belafonte, Trini Lopez, Bobby Bare, etc.

People write them when they are thinking about sour people in their lives perhaps
