Does it have the same fingerings as a guitar or bass guitar, but higher? How many octaves higher? Does it have no connection to them at all, fingering-wise?

Four on a normal tenor uke. Baritone ones sometimes use double bass strings. There are also eight string ukes, but they are just double stringed like twelve string guitar. Depending on the type of uke, soprano, tenor, or baritone, they are two or three octaves higher than a bass. A bass is also in bass cleff and ukes are treble cleff.

I play uke and I created what I call a contrabass uke. I took a regular full body guitar and restrung it with a bass bridge to make it four strings. It has a nice full sound and blends well with other ukes or even played solo. It doesn't have the kick or depth of a regular guitar, but I think it sounds much better than even the $800 Kamaka Ukes and it was realy cheap to make.

It has 4 strings. I guess it's comparable to a mandalin...
It's 2 or 3 octaves higher. It has a fret-board, and everything just like a guitar.

It has 4 strings, tuned to G C E A, the C being lower than the G. Look at this page for more info:
