The Spanish and English had their own reasons for exploration...

that's too short, but I don't know how to make it sound better/ stronger. The paper is going to be about just that--the reasons--but it definitely seems like it needs to be lengthened. Thanks for the help, I appreciate it.

The reasons for exploration were varied as both the Spanish and the English had their own purpose for discovery.

As both the English and Spanish explored (the area), their reasons were varied although each country sought diligently the knowledge of the new land.

Hope those give you an idea or two. Opening sentences should convey a hint at the topic to follow as well as a brief introduction to your arguments later in the paper.
Good Luck!

You need to give a very short explanation of the reasons for the Spanish/English exploration, such as: Because the Spanish and English economies were sagging after long, costly wars with each other, both countries decided to explore in order to bring in new revenue possibilities.

One other thing, if your screen name you are using on here is your REAL name (it's very pretty)...CHANGE it. There really are predators on-line and they even visit Yahoo. If you were my daughter, darlin', I would be very concerned. No Mom likes to think her child is in any danger... especially on the 'net these days. Hugs and hope the paper goes well!!
