The principal characteristics of mass are inertia (or momentum) and gravitational attraction. Inertia is the force required to change the velocity (momentum) of a mass and is given by f = ma, and gravitational attraction is given by f = G*(m1*m2)/r^2. The fact that the same mass number applies to both forces is the main factor that led to the General Theory of Relativity.
