Use their favorite snacks like gummy bears or teddy grahams and such, using snacks like grapes or apple pieces can also be a fun, but healthy alternative to the chocolaty and sugary stuff kids normally have. First, though make sure that they understand counting- then start with basic math problems- like 1+2, and 3-1, and such- for each questions they get right they get to eat one snack. The best part is you can do this during snack time to get your kid used to the idea, and then work your way up to longer study times. As they start to get better at math, start with harder problems. When they start moving on to multiplying and dividing- you can use the same technique- and since they'll already be familiar with the teaching method it will be easier to make the transition. If they don't like the snacks idea- use a point system. For each problems they solve, they get one point, as the problems get harder, they're worth more points, and when they get so many points (whatever you think is reasonable for you child) they get a reward- like a trip to the park, or their favorite treat, or go out for ice cream. You can make colorful graph and have you're child add up the points himself (but keep track yourself- just in case) so that they can start associating math with everyday life.
Both types of teaching processes have worked for me!

I take it you are meaning to ask about how to teach a five year old child addition and subtraction? Good for you!! Give them a leg up on learning.
I worked with mine early and it really paid off. Your main barrier will be their short attention span. They are also very tactile at five, so use things they can handle and look at. Cookies, grapes, or any treat they like will work very well... "Here is one cookie, if I give you another, how many do you have? Now, if you eat one cookie, how many do you have left?" Keep the lessons short. Of course, this is all supposing that they already do know how to count things, not just say the numbers.
Good luck!! You've got some fun in front of you!! :D

Very easy.......use everyday items that they are used to being around....fruit snacks, juice boxes, crayons,etc....They will be drawn to it....in fact have them draw pictures & have them do a show & tell back to you...they will love it....I went thru all kinds of cool stuff with both my kids who are gifted by using simple stuff along with music too ....make it fun and they will catch on like crazy!!

use toys that he likes. use matchbox cars or dolls. Tell him if you have 3 cars and you take one away how many cars do you have left? or if you have 5 cars and you add 2 more cars how many do you have left. Use props because I'm sure that if you just write it down, he won't be able to understand it.
