You can refuse ANY medical treatment from what I have heard but I also heard an IV is a mandatory labor and delivery thing now because it saves time if they need to administer anything in an emergency. IV's are not painful. I am needle-phobic and I just look the other way during the initial needle poke and it's only a pinch then it's done. You have nothing to worry about

YES!! Absolutely! It is the patients right to refuse treatment. When I had my first I didn't have an IV. With my second, I did have an IV because I tested positive for group B strep. Without the treatment of IV antibiotics during labor I would have put my son at risk of a very serious illness. As a patient you have the right to refuse treatment, but you also have the responsibility to educate yourself as well as to WHY your doctor may want you to have an IV. If its for the same reason I had it you may want to go ahead with it. If its because your doc wants you to have one just in case then maybe consider refusing it.

You can legally refuse any and all medical treatments, BUT if you want pain medication, and epidural or end up needing a C-section you will need an IV It is always easier on YOU to get the IV started when there is not a emergency situation going on and you are not so tense.

You can always refuse medical treatment, refusing an IV during labor is not a good idea since you can risk dehydration for both yourself and your baby

Yes, I refused it when I first got to the hospital. They just wanted to make sure that I drank plenty of water.

When the doctor got to the hospital she wanted to put one in and I had to sign an AMA (against medical advice) form so that I wouldn't sue them if something went wrong.

My baby had some heard decels when I was pushing so they asked if they could put an IV in a third time. This time I consented. They had that thing in in about two seconds. I pushed her out in under a minute after that. They just put the heparin lock in and not the fluids. They took it out an hour after my daughter was born.

Things to keep in mind though. If you have an epidural you must have an IV. I didn't have one.

Nobody has ever been able to get an IV in me because I have rolling veins. When I got to the hospital it was time to deliver, right then! They rushed me into delivery and started trying to give me an IV. I told the nurse that she probably wouldn't be able to do it because nobody had ever been able to do it before. She said if I wanted an epidural I would have to have an IV. So that led me to believe that I only had to have one if I was going to get an epidural. I didn't have time to get one so they tried to inject meds through the IV that the nurse FINALLY got in my arm and that didn't work so they just gave me a shot in each leg. So I'm thinking, and I could be wrong, that since she said "if you want an epidural", and since they gave me shots in my legs that the answer to your question would be yes, you can refuse, depending on your situation.

Why would you want to refuse it? They only put in there for your care and the safety of your baby. IF there is an emergency they have quick access to give medicine necessary. It also keeps you hydrated as others have mentioned. There are lots of things in medicine to question but an IV during labor is not one of them. They aren't going to add anything into the IV unless it is necessary.

i think it relatively is the comparable as the different scientific therapy - you could refuse. whether, the main significant difficulty is the risk-free arrival of your toddler, and would it not relatively is needed so you might get an iv, then the well-being of toddler is extra significant. whether, i will certainly say you will probably no longer be stricken approximately getting ivs once you're in labour. i'm no longer too stricken approximately needles as such, yet I do have a dread of needles contained at the back of my hand and having a form of canulas in - any time I even have considered them in somebody else I even have felt extremely queasy approximately it, and the seen me getting it - brrr! whether, I had to get one whilst i substitute into in labour, and that i'll be thoroughly common right here - i did no longer notice one bit it moving into. It does no injury to point to the midwives and so on you're terrified of needles, however - they have many suggestion on a thank you to make the entire ingredient simpler. The primary practitioner that positioned mine in substitute into dazzling, he stored me speaking approximately some stupid nonsense the entire time, i substitute into waiting for the needle to pass in, yet as I mentioned, i did no longer notice till he advised me that it substitute into in and completed with.

It's your body. You can refuse anything you don't want. You might be asked to sign a waiver, depending on what you are refusing.

Another possibility is to allow a heplock to be put in. This would allow them to hook you up to an IV quickly later if you needed one.

Sure you can refuse anything you don't want. But labor is very hard and you can become dehydrated. So talk to your dr about pro and cons

good luck
