Because often the facts are embarrassing. People think it is kinder to ignore embarrassing things.
The sad thing is that if you ignore the facts, it's impossible to make positive change.

Many people don't like having to face the facts, because it intrudes on their little fantasy worlds and threatens their conclusions.
Anyone who is rational and open-minded welcomes verifiable facts, because it allows them to re-evaluate their conclusions, and that leads to more understanding and better application of theory.
It's only those people who are afraid their conclusions are invalid that rabidly refuse to consider facts or alternatives.
