Democrats were originally liberal in philosophy, but have largely become just a party that supports big government, high taxes, and heavy government subsidies and social programs. The current Democratic party is largely Socialist in their economic model, using the modern tax-based form, rather than the original central-ownership approach.

If you look at the dictionary definition of liberal, you'll realize that most of the current Democratic platform does not align with those ideals.

Liberals believe in personal freedoms, lack of government regulation, and truly equal opportunity. A liberal someone who favors a political philosophy of progress and reform and the protection of civil liberties, and who favors an economic theory of laissez-faire, resulting in self-regulating markets rather than government regulation of business.

Most Democratic initiatives favor heavy governmetn regulation of business, and affirmative action (which is not equal opportunity).

First you have to recognize that political beliefs are based on a fundemental philosophy. Which in turn as its own system of morals, or as some say values. Which are used to determine what is good and what is bad.

The fundemental philosophy of the Democrat party is "that certain people are capable of comprehending, adjudicating, and arranging the world around us; and that such people are called upon to guide all others toward an increasingly perfect and just world in which all desires will have been either eliminated or satisfied." (America's 30 years War) It sounds good and explains why they actually have followers.

This is the philosophy of the French Revolution and Marx. Which relegates the individual the status of state's property. And results in a twisted value system where it is BAD to keep what you have earned yourself, but GOOD to consume the fruits of anothers labor. Where it is BAD to enjoy happiness earned by your own honest toil but GOOD to enjoy it at the expense of others.

Aside from the resulting upside down system of morallity it creates there is a fundemental flaw to their philolosphy. "...the basic fact that it is impossible for any man to survey more than a limited field, to be aware of the urgency of more than a limited number of needs, or whether he takes a warm interest in the welfare of every human being he knows, the ends about which he can be concerned will always be only an infinitesimal fraction of the needs of all men..."

So they set out on an impossible mission that is doomed from the start but with such a lofty goal, no expense is too great, no suffering or misery too much to ask to achieve it. 100,000,000 dead at the hands of their own government in the last century, in the blind attempt to obtain a perfect socieity yet we are no closer and indeed further from the goal now.

It's sad they have any followers at all. But they manage to fill their ranks with the young and impressionable and the non-thinking.

Well as an alternative to the republican party, they stand for: "civil liberties, social freedoms, equal rights, equal opportunity, and a free enterprise system tempered by government intervention. In recent history they have tended to be more fiscally responsible with taxpayer dollars than the current republican party.
