Patriotism is an effect of nationalism, you could call it a side effect i suppose.
Without nationalism there would be no patriotism. It would be unthinkable.
As far as what is happening today, yes we are seeing an enormous upsurge in nationalism in the US after 9/11 (though the US has typically been a very nationalistic country). However what is dangerous today is that it is being exploited by certain political leaders to achieve goals that have nothing whatsoever to do with 9/11
that is the danger of nationalism and patriotism in general. since it is an irrational response (that is, it is not based on logical processes, but rather is a gut or emotional response) it is easily manipulated. If you were being rational you would say, "but why are we invading iraq if it were al qaeda and afghanistan that attacked us?" or if you were rational you would say, "well i didnt support the war yesterday before it was declared so i won't support it now that it has been declared"
but most people are not that rational. before the war was declared about 50% of the US was opposed to it. the day after it was declared 75% were in favor it. there was no fundamental change in the reasons or motivations in going to war over the course of those 24 hours. but for at least 1/4th of the population the irrational power of nationalism and patriotism overwhelmed their rational faculties.

In an honest opinion, yes! Patriotism is now used as a shield against the nationalism. Many people who are looking forward to dissolving the national integrity play dirty politics in the name of the patriotism. The agenda is the creation of a nation which can settle their interest better keeping everything else aside. In this situation, they bat in the name of patriotism and play the game for the nationalism.

Just for the misguided. There's an awfully thin line there, don't you think?
A patriot would fight to the bitter end to correct those things wrong with the country while the nationalist would fight to the bitter end to hide and deceive to keep those things that are wrong an "Open Secret" (everyone knows the truth but no one talks about it).

No, patriotism is a part of Nationalism, but it is not the same thing. Being proud of your nation dose not mean you believe your nation is better then others or that you nation should control others.
