If you haven't been using ovulation predictors or charting your temp, you can't be certain of when you ovulated. Most women get their period about 14 days after they ovulate. The part of a women's cycle before ovulation can vary from month to month where as the time from ovulation to menstruation is pretty consistent. It may not be that your period is late, but that you either haven't ovulated yet, or you ovulated later than you normally do.
For most women, the early symptoms of pregnancy are very similar to PMS symptoms. Could it be that your cycle is just a little longer than usual and your symptoms are PMS and not pregnancy?
If you are certain you ovulated and a hpt is negative, then contact your doctor and request a blood test.
If you aren't sure when you ovulated and a hpt is negative, then wait a week and take another hpt. If its still negative and you still haven't gotten your period, then contact your doctor for a blood test and see where he/she thinks you should go next.
