Since we can't read each others minds, we have to be able to label things and associate those names with the object so that we we communicate, we know what each other is referring to. However, this is not flawless of course because one word for a "thing" can have different meaning to another person.

Calling something "stuff" is understandable across many generations.

"That stuff that comes out of your mouth when you spit" is called spit. There is another word for it, but do you even care? I would call it stuff as well if I could get away with it.
