Talking is simply the oral projection of your voice. YOu may have nothing to say, or there may be nobody to listen to.
Communication is the interactivity of information. Communication can be oral (talking, radio broadcast). It can be visual (body language, video communication, TV, etc), and it can be written (email and the office memo).
The whole point of communication is to get a message across, but that does not mean that it was understood (as one person suggested). If 'communication' implied that something was understood, there would be no need to the $400 Million Dollar Effective Commmunication seminar industry.
Good communication is a key to everything in life................the workplace, building and maintaining relationships, etc

To me, the difference is that communicating must involve at least one other person listening to someone talking and making comments or basically interacting verbally.
Talking can involve only one person, or more, but there isn't an interaction verbally from the recipients of the talking.

Talking is merely uttering meaningful sounds without attempting to getting across a message. Communicating or communication on the other hand employs some factors.
*sender
*receiver
*message
*manner of transmission/message channel
*feedback channel
1. Sender - the speaker or origin of the message
2. receiver - the listener or the one receiving the message
3. message - or input
4. message channel - the way by which the sender uses to put his message across, can be thru talking, singing, acting etc.
5. feedback channel - the manner by which the receiver gives back his feedback
