It was VERY clever and ONLY because I had a banking official look at the check I was mailed, did I keep from losing $2,500. I'm not sure I can explain in just a few words.

I was to deposit the check for $2,500 they sent, and then call them back ..ohyes...tell NO ONE!! Then I was to send them $2500 to cover insurance costs. You THINK you just deposited real money in your account and that is the $ to send back to them.(rt away, that is weird.) Here is what really happens...the check has a routing number that doesn't exist, but you don't know that. So while the bank is checking it out, you think you have sent the money to the guy on the phone, but you have REALLY sent your OWN money. In about 3 weeks the bank tells you,sorry..check no good. Too late...you already sent the crooks $2,500 of YOUR money. Did I explain that so you understood?? It was a VERY clever scam...it never occured to me I could get hurt...just put the $ in the bank and then send to the company on the phone. I am,inDEED, blessed. I was going to have the check photocopied, but changed my mind at the last second to speak to a bank official. He said he sees them all the time.

I thought: " what's the harm. Deposit check and then send it right back to them....what a sorrow that would have produced!!!!!!!!
It's terrible that these people can't put their cleverness to do good.

Was it one of those, "you are a sweepstakes winner, however ... " scams? I got one of those. The check was for $3,800. I called the bank and it was, of course, bogus. Unfortunately, some people get those and run straight to the bank and then to the mall....

I have just never been able to grasp the logic of some total stranger sending me a check for $5,000 and asking me to deposit it and then send them back $4,500 by Western Union right away. This is such an obvious scam it is amazing to me that anyone could fall for it, but apparently very many people do.
If some total stranger sent me a check like that, even if I were an idiot, I'd deposit it and then send them back nothing. Why should I send them anything? I don't get it. How can people believe this stuff?

I understand completely. I was frauded through my debit/credit card a few months ago in the amount of $700. Apparently someone played around with pin numbers until they got it and made 5 sales, minutes apart. I live in Texas and the person that did it lived in Madrid, Spain but was not able to contact the people that the sales were made from.......real good scam. At least your banker checked on it for you.....God blessed you! I ended up only having to pay the first $50 and the bank insurance covered the rest. But they asked me if I had given my pin # to anyone in Spain. I have never been there and don't know anyone......lol.......Guess they had to ask though.

Never with a check. But I have gotten several e-mails with a phishing scheme. That's where they try to fake you into going to a website you think is your bank, credit card company, Paypal or e-Bay account and give them your login credentials or banking information. I almost fell for it once but realized in time that it was a scam. I wish these people would find something constructive to do with their time. If they put half the effort into 'real' work, they wouldn't need to steal.

I threw it away! and i have also had people call me and say can you verify your account #'s for me! and i say no and hung up! i have also had people call and try to get me to send them money and i say no i wont do it! and hang up! i put my self on the do not call list and if phone telemarketers call me i always say no thanks i am not interested and please add me to your do not call list! that has stopped a lot of the phone scams comming my way! i mean i have an unlisted phone # anyway and yet these people still seem to get ahold of it! There really is too much scamming going on in this world and we have to be aware of it and watch out!!!!!!

in a lot of circumstances you may anticipate if the seat is likely to fall (ex. considered one of those fancy thick bathroom lid covers are on the bathroom), in which case I carry it up with one hand and objective with the different.
