It was a human reaction to pull it out. When a person is shocked and scared, that is what they will do, take out whatever it is that is hurting.

Maybe he would have lived longer had he left it in and let medical professionals take it out, but you have to remember that he was shocked, scared, and in a lot of pain. Any of us would have done the same.

It opened the wound much more. It is far better to leave things in (knives, etc) and let the doctor or EMT remove them.

Easy for us to say.... human nature is to yank it out.

Yes, it's a reaction, but it was the worst thing he could have done medically. That's why people train in first aid and rescue techniques...to hedge the bets of running on instinct and overcoming it with rational thought. When a foreign object is lodged in the body, it is possibly compressing against arteries. Removing the object is like breaking a dam. The object that is causing your death might actually be saving your life if you don't remove it. Chances are, with such a remote area, he might have died anyway with such a serious injury. But he assured his death when he removed the barb.

David M. may be on to something considering the neurotoxin. I understand the medical concepts of dislodging foreign bodies, but I admittedly do not know about the neurotoxins of sting rays.

It's all so sad.

You people just won't let this alone, will you? Rhetorical. For the final time, who knows why people say what they say. What difference does it make what THEY say! Irwin is gone and that is that! You and the others could debate this forever but why would you want to? Don't you have other things to do? I hope so! Peace to Irwin's family, and now, it really is time to move forward and let this thing go! Find something constructive to do. And to Tink and Sir J, that is a ridiculous theory, and why everyone debates this endlessly, I don't know. Even if he had left it in the poison would have gotten him as it was DIRECTLY in his heart and he would have suffered cardiac arrest regardless! And he was STABBED IN the heart. You do not survive that no matter whether or not the barb was left in, or he pulled it out. People die every day and so will ALL OF YOU EVENTUALLY, in one manner or another. Now all of you GO AND GET LIVES!

I think it was stupid for Steve to take a barb in the chest period. I was disappointed to find his remains were not fed to a crocodile, seeing as he made a living out of pestering them.

A portion of the audio for Steve's Great Barrier Reef Documentary:

" G'day mate! We are going down now to where lots of little fishes and corals grow together. The Great Barrier Reef is a vast ridge rising out of the ocean floor. It took 100's of thousands of years for these reefs to grow. C'mon, lets get going.!"
SPLASH
" As you can see, there is a lot of different life down here. Look here, in the sand. That's a stingray. They hide in the sand and wait for a little fish to get to close then BLAM They get 'em. Got to be careful around these rays, 'cause they have a poisonous defense mechanism in their tails. Let me just pick up this little bloke and show you his .......Crikey! Damn thing ....hurts....ohhhh...."

The barb could have been acting as a plug and slowing the rate of bleeding. The theory is that if he had left it in medical treatment may have been able to save him.

It probably was human reaction. However, when you've been stabbed you should never remove the object due to excessive bleeding.
But this was also a problem with poison so even if he had not it would not have worked.

Because they are ignorant!! The barb contains a neurotoxin that would have stopped the heart almost instantly. It is a wonder he was conscious long enough to pull the barb out.

Just people trying to be know alls and appear clever.

I reckon they think he was Superman.NO ONE would have lived thru that.Even if they HAD left the barb in, the poison would have killed him.It was a kneejerk reaction and it didn't change a thing.

because our rational minds tell us it will make it worse by pulling it out. Seeing he was in shock, I understand why he did it. People just think they could handle the same situation better, but in reality...we would of all did the same thing.
