Unless we find some way of travelling beyond the speed of light it's very unlikely. One of the nearest galaxies to us, the Andromeda Galaxy, is 2.5 million light years away. In other words, even travelling at the speed of light, it would take us 2.5 million years to get there. Even to cross our own Galaxy would take 80~100 thousand years. The galaxies are such a vast distance away even visiting them is out of the question according to current physical laws.

Our own galaxy is another story. It may be possible to find inhabitable planets relatively close by. If the planet is in it's infancy and needs to be "terraformed" (it's atmosphere/surface physical forced into a state that humans and other organisms can live), then it may take thousands of years to colonise fully. Programs such as Star Trek are very optimistic about both space travel, the potential for inhabitable worlds, and the probability of other sentient species being present.

My instinct is we'll probably blow ourselves to kingdom come before we reach a point where we can colonize the universe.

Well we pretty much have this planet covered, so I'd say we're off to a good start. Even the journey of a thousand miles starts with the first step.
