The formula for conversion is:

degC = (5/9) * (degF - 32)

so for degC = degF:

deg = (5/9) * (deg - 32)

a little algebra later:

(9/5) * deg = deg - 32
((9/5) * deg) - deg = -32
((9/5) * deg) - (5/5) * deg = -32
(4/5) * deg = -32
deg = -(5/4) * 32
deg = -40

How to find the answer:

Relationship between F and C temperature scales:
F = (9/5)C + 32

Set both F and C equal to the unknown X:
X = (9/5)X + 32

Solve for X:
0 = (4/5)X + 32
-32 = (4/5)X
X = -32*(5/4) = -8*5 = -40

So -40 C = -40 F
