There's a really cool PBS miniseries called The Story of English, which presented lots of great facts about English's history. I lost my copy of the accompanying book and still miss it sometimes. I'm including a link to the video series as well as the companion book.

Encyclopedias and reference books like Encarta, Collier's, Britannica, etc. If it's for a serious research, I'd stay away from Wikipedia 'cause not everything written there is factual.
