A shovel pass is just that...a pass since it is thrown forward (doesn't matter if it is under hand or over the shoulder). A pitch is usually a run play with the pitch made behind the QB so it is not considered a pass and as such if the RB drops it, it is a fumble.

It's receiving yards because the pass is still a forward pass. Unless the QB throws it backwards, then it is just like a toss play, and would be counted as rushing yards. If screen passes were rushing yards, if the back missed the pass and it hit the ground, it would be counted as a fumble. As long as the ball is a forward pass, even if it is caught behind the line, then it counts as a pass play.

A pitch is considered a run. A shovel pass goes beyond the line of scrimmage and is considered a pass.

I am pretty sure the rule has to be over the shoulder and past the point of release (as in the rule of either being a fumble, or an incomplete pass), to be considered a pass. I think it's rushing yards.

If the ball is caught behind the line of scrimmage, the play counts for rushing yards. If the pass is caught beyond the line ofscrimmage then the play counts for passing yards.
