My dad knocked a hole into the systern thru the basement wall and its full of nice clear water all of the time. Should I close it up or just keep it? I am afraid a kid will fall in the well. Do you pay to have these filled or what?

You are very fortunate to have a well on your property. Very good means for "fresh" water. You can use it for watering plants, lawn etc. It should help you save allot on the water bill. I would make sure it is covered very well if it is outside and accessable to people. You wouldn't want anyone to get hurt. You could also hook up a pump to it and pump the water to a holding tank, This could be used fore watering landscape or even taking a shower. Very beneficial. I wish I had one on my property.

I think it's more of a liability, I've heard of kids falling in them.

But I was looking at a house that had a well AND city water. They used the well water for watering their garden and the yard, and it saved them some money from the utilities bill.
