They should be forced to pay compensation... and Andrew Jackson should be taken off the twenty dollar bill for his crimes against humanity (i.e. The Trail of Tears)...

In 1992, I ran for Congress in Nevada, and this was one of the issues I argued. At the time, the federal government was debating what to do with the Nevada Test Site, a huge section of the state that had been used as a testing ground for nuclear weapons.

My opponents both had very expensive government programs planned for the test site. I argued that the test site didn't belong to the federal government, and that there were federal treaties controlling the land. The incumbent Democrat simply said that the federal courts had invalidated those treaties many years earlier, had unilaterally determined compensation, and the tribes in question had no more claim to it. In effect, he argued that the federal government (the Courts) had decided that the federal government (the Congress and the President) were not required to follow federal treaties.

Unfortunately for me and for others who believe that those treaties should be honored, the tribal members in Nevada didn't really bother to turn out to vote, I lost the election, and the continued violation of the treaties has continued.

Clearly, the U.S. should comply with all of its treaties. Equally clearly, it does not.

Those who make promises should always take every painstaking measure to fulfill them unless it is totally impossible. Those Governments who keep promises are admirable. Historically there has been very little in the way of national generosity. It always comes down to f* it or fight it. Whether right or wrong, it has been that initiative that has shaped global civilization.

I believe that if you went to the people where you lived and petitioned for statewide land requisites, you would gain a greater foothold. Political back-scratching may feel demeaning, but it's a grassroots start with staying power. Starting more state rep writing campaigns can help you gain momentum. I would stand beside you, anyway.

It would be interesting if a tribe could take a signed treaty to court and get it upheld. I would totally root for you, however since I have a feeling that our government would turn a blind eye you need to do this American Style- Set aside some land on your reservation, build a casino, and take consumers for everything they're willing to spend. Then when you can afford high profile lawers take the same suit to the highest court possible. And buy yourself something nice, you deserve it.

Should the Sioux be made to pay for killing over 1 million Illinai.
Should the Sioux be made to pay for killing the Wabash
Should the Sioux be made to pay for killing the Kankakee
Should the Sioux be made to pay for killing the Eastern Shoshone

The list could go on but the point I am making is obvious.

I 1806 Keokuk killed my ancestors or drove them from their lands.
Later he sold Iowa to the US laughing that it was Pawnee land that he sold.

In a season of misadventure many things transpired Either we get beyond it or we will digress to the level of the Arabs and Jews fighting 5000 year old disputes.

I would like to see Michigan returned to tribal lands. It is devastated as an industrial center and has one of the worse economy's in America.

It would be a good place to hunt.

Dude, the American and Canadaian gov't should follow every single claim and treaty they ever signed with your nations. I strongly believe in Abroginal Self gOvernment, cause the white Anglo-Saxon culture has no respect for your culture. Never has, and never will. Shoot- look at what they go after around the world. What country are these countries in fighting for peace (to quote George Carlin- 'Fighting for peace is like ******* for virginity') and none of them have the same cultral aspects as they hold. And no white people. So it makes them feel safe to kill thousands of them off.... Much like the first nations in North America and the genocide (yes, it was a genocide that occured) that transpired while the Europeans first settled here. Cheers...

I just got scalped at an Indian casino. Hope that helps.

All kidding aside, I truly wish the great horse culture of the Americas was never wiped out. It is one of the most horrid (and not talked about) genocidal atrocities that has happened in the last few hundred years. Right up there with the Holocaust.

I would truly love to know what that culture would have evolved into in the present day if the "white man" had not wiped it out. We'll never know. I loved reading Black Elk Speaks.

As for your question, who's going to make the USA do anything?

Any treaty made by the US to the American Indian tribes should be fullfilled,,we came in and drove the natives west as we went,,,now that the times have changed, all cultures in this country have the same obligation to go out there and make a living as the rest of us do,no freebies these days..we all have to live with one another now.

No. If everyone who was ever cheated, abused, etc, was compensated, the world would be bankrupt. It just can't happen.
This is ancient history. You are the only conquered people that still has soverignty, tax exemptions, etc. Just be an American and forget what a handful of corrupt men did a long time ago. You think you are the only ones men like that screwed over? People like that abuse everyone. Just live in the present and try to treat us like individuals cause most are not guilty and wouldn't have done that.

The United States faught a war with the Native Americans. They won territory and kicked many off their lands. This is how countries have gained territory for 1000's of years. The Native American tribes also faught each other for this land so what makes their claim any more valid than ours?

The U.S. should never have signed those treaties and should never have compensated the Native Americans. They should treat them exactly the same as anyone else. It is the stupid liberals and their white guilt campaigns that cause all the racism and problems in America.
