Considering political influence + economic strength + military power, I would say seven of the G8 (USA, Russia, France, Japan, Germany, Britain, Italy) and China, India, and Israel.

The USA is obviously #1, it is the world's largest economy, has the world's most powerful forces, and is very forward in intervention in other countires to promote "freedom" and "democracy" (or "to protect its oil and Israel", depending on your politics).

China is #2 I say: the most populous country, a vital source of imports and destination for exports for everyone else, and has the largest armed forces in the world and nuclear weapons.

Economically, Japan and Germany come next, then France and Britain. France and Britain have sizeable forces, a UN veto, and a few nuclear weapons too. Japan and Germany have more money and Germany is the #1 influence on what the European Union does.

India is the world's 2nd most populous country and its greatest force for good. It has never in thousands of years invaded other people's countries, it is a beacon of spiritual values, and it is after China the developing economy that is the best opportunity for others to make money by doing business with.

Italy just scrapes in at the back of the list of major Western nations. It's a large economy and a useful and loyal contributor to NATO.

Russia is a shadow of its former self as a military power and a mess economically but it is still immensely influential over its neighbors, it has a UN veto and (lots of, maybe rusty) nuclear weapons, and it has oil and gas in vast amounts.

Israel gets my tenth place because it has so much influence over American foreign policy and because it militarily dominates the Middle East, the one part of the world where warring is more important to governments and to local citizens than the economy.
