We had our guinea pig for several years, he lived as long as any guinea pig ever does, and he was on pine bedding his whole life. We bought it from the pet stores, or even in bulk at K-Mart in their pet department. He never had any liver problems.
I looked elsewhere, and found a guinea pig site, where they were discussing the pine bedding and found this:
"QUESTION:Is Kiln dried pine the same as natural pine that has no chemicals added? I haven't been able to find any pine bedding that says kiln dried but did find some that said "all natural pine with no chemicals added". Same or not?
ANSWER: Kiln drying is a process that removes harmful oils (which are natural but still no good for pigs). I buy Norstar Kiln Dried Pine Shavings from a tack and feed store. It is also extremely cheap because it is sold in bulk for horse stalls. The performance has been great."
So you might want to just check the package and make sure it is kiln dried, which removes the chemicals that they say will harm the guinea pigs.
I'm sure that straw would be good, also, just maybe a little more messy and hard to keep in one place.

yes that is absolutly fine. i have kept rabbits and guinea pigs for years but one thing i will warn you is that you may find them eating a great deal of it, meaning you will have to use a lot! guinea pigs are very greedy animals and will just munch away on it all day! i usually use wood shaving all over the floor of the hutch, straw for the bedding and hay to eat but apart from them eating it it would be great as bedding.

Hay is ok, its what we used to use in the old days. It may have had wild rabbits and mice on, thats why people don't like it. But I still think its better than sawdust. And you probably get mice around at night anyway...!

Hay is totally fine but a cheaper alternative would be sawdust or shredded paper(not newspaper! the ink is poisonous).
