I don't have a shuffle, but you hold the center button and the play button (i think) at the same time and I thought it resets it to factory setting. I would never have cleared my PC playlists. That's what reflects into you ipod when you update it next.

If I want to clear my ipod shuffle, I connect it to my pc, open itunes, go to the left side of the screen, select ipod then go to edit,, select all and then select clear. All the songs on your ipod are deleted.

Load your disc onto another pc, library will be empty. Plug in your ipod, and it will ask if you want to replace library! Click yes, library empty! Tada!
