Eugene, having grew up in Pittsburgh....I have one answer for you.
Pennsylvania's pi$$-poor excuse for an economy.
The state (ahem, 'commonwealth') economy is a joke....the state as a whole is losing population at a rapid rate.
While Pittsburgh is a beautiful city, the people are very cordial, and there are a ton of things to do from hiking to shopping and everything in-between.......
there still aren't any jobs worth mentioning.
And that's why....it's the reason I left PA.
The pro's don't outweigh the con's for Pittsburgh. It can be beautiful, it can have good public transport, it can have friendly people.....it can have all those things : but when you're broke and you can't find decent employment to fix the issue at hand. Your choice is either go into private business ownership, put up with the situation (which too many PA folks do), or move to where there are quite simply just better opporotunity.
Everything over 30K/year requires either a BA degree or 5 years of experience to even get a resume looked at.
And they wonder why the youth is leaving? High taxes (the commonwealth has some of the highest in the nation), low job odds, crappy weather, bad air quality, etc etc....
No wonder they're still airing the same commercials that I saw in '97 (graduation year) BEGGING the recent graduates not to leave the state for college, and also not for employment.
When I was looking for employment after graduating from Duquesne....there was NOTHING in my field in PA, so I left for TX where all the industry was.
Just the truth man....the commonwealth is economically dead.
Though, I do miss shopping at Eide's in the Strip....their music selection was ridiculous, and I miss Primanti Bro's.
peace,
Ryan

I left Pittsburgh 9 years ago because of a job opportunity that lured me to Philadelphia. I loved Pittsburgh and still miss it because it's the nicest city to live in! However, it's really hard to establish a good career in Pittsburgh, and that's why I left.

There are no jobs here. Taxes are outrageous. The place just sucks if you are looking to be rich.
But I also couldn't imagine living anywhere else. Everyone is so friendly. I've lived other places but missed the burgh so much. I came back home. Sure I'm poor. I'll probably never have as much as I did before. But I'm happy.

Because taxes are cheaper in most of the suburbs. And you can usually get more land in the suburbs for what you'd pay in the city. And there's the perception that crime is lower in the suburbs.
