The castle is pretty obvious - my husband and I loved it. Walking around the Royal Mile and throughout the old city was fun too. There are amazing things hidden down some of the tiny ancient walkways that branch off. We also went on one of the 'scary' night tours which was a bit expensive, but we had a blast and got to see places under the city that you normally wouldn't. Our tour guide was an excellent story teller so we learned a lot of history at the same time. Ours was only a day and a half visit, so I'm looking forward to going back to see much more. There's so much to see in Edinburgh; a lot depends on what your interests are.
In the Old Town area, apart from the Castle there's the Scotch Whisky Heritage Centre, St. Giles Cathedral, and the John Knox House. Elsewhere, if you're into art then the National Gallery in Princes Street is a must.
If the weather's good and you fancy doing a bit of walking, you can get good views across the city and surrounding area from Arthur's Seat (an extinct volcano on the city's south-eastern outskirts).

Airth Castle and Edinburgh Castles are both beatiful. Royal Mile is neat to see, go to the 2 restaurants that claim JK Rowling as a client. See the modern parliment buildings juxtapost to the royal castle. Both are breathtaking but the parliment buildings are outta place.I liked the scottish museum, and if you're a dog lover go see grey friars bobby- quite the story. There is a great restaurant with a few of 2 bridges the bridge is called the forth on the firth

The view from Calton Hill is lovely, with the city on your left and Firth of Forth on your right. The castle has a better display of the crown jewels than you'll find at the Tower in London. Try local food and support local restaurants. I always have Haggis and Irn-Bru when I'm there. If in the evening you want to see a movie, there is a nice old independently-owned cinema not far from the centre of the city with cushy armchairs and footrests. I love the Thistle Chapel in St Giles's but it may be closed for restoration.

Go to the Edinburgh Dungeon - its a kids tour but its the funniest thing - really entertaining. Camera Obsecura is good- all these pictures that are like a trick of the mind. The pubs are good (Finnegan's Wake is really good -great buzz and live music every night) there but the clubs are'nt as much fun

The Castle. Definitely Dynamic Earth it is brilliant. Camera obscurer is interesting, you get a view of the whole of Edinburgh and history as well. Holyrood House is interesting, you can find out more history and see the room Mary, Queen of Scots slept in. If there is a rugby match, then Murrayfield is the place to be.

I'm jealous. I love that place. Just soak in the history around you, check out the architecture, etc. We visited some graveyards that were seriously spooky, did the night tour, spent a LOT of time at the pubs. I really like Maggie Dickson's, as it is pretty macabre and gothic.
