Would like to use it to plug a small hole in the bottom of a gas tank.

nope, but if you go to the auto part store, they sell a gas tank repair sealant that will hold. you have to make sure the part that needs to be plugged is clean and will stay dry until the sealant cures. the best way is to drain or use all the gas up first so nothing leaks. then clean the area around the hole from rust and dirt. then seal with the gas tank glue. wait to dry. but follow the instructions on the package. that stuff really works

NO> It is too brittle, and gasoline will deteriorate the epoxy.
There is an epoxy-based product specifically for this available at most parts stores.
