The cost of tuition and books can be high, especially for out of state tuition. Look at your school's web site. Aside from that?
Rent is usually your highest expense,
If you have a roomate it might be as low as $250, or as high as $1000. Depending on the City you live in. Often times students rent a house together, or you may live in a dorm (campus group housing). I would say average is $500
Next highest expense is food,
A minimal diet of Cereal and milk for breakfast, sandwhiches for lunch, and a TV dinner for dinner, plus drinks and snacks should cost about $30-50 a week in groceries.
Fast food cost about $6 a meal, Hamburger, Soda, French Fried potatoes.
Dinner out? Like a date? the entree can range between $12-20 per person, plus $8 for an appetizer or desert. If you like to have beer/wine/drinks with dinner count about $3-7 each at a bar/ restaraunt. So a dinner date could cost $50 minimum.
Clothing:
Most college students wear jeans and tee-shirts, so that isn't too bad. A pair of jeans is about $40 at a department store, and tee-shirts are about $20. Underwear can be bought by the pack so you could spend as little as $20 for 8 pairs. Socks are likewise, another $20. Shoes can vary greatly from $20 - 150 for athletic shoes (most college guys wear). Depending on where you live, you may also need a jacket $50-200.
5 pairs jeans $200
5 Tee shirts $100
Underwear and socks $40
Shoes $50
Jacket $100
= $490 for "nice enough" but not fancy.
Entertainment
Movie = $8 ticket (any seat), optional food/drink higher than normal prices, usually $5 for a soda, and $4 for a candy or popcorn.
Books for fun? $5 for a paperback sci-fi novel up to $50 for a special edition hardcover. Plenty of great books for free at the library though!
Bowling or Billards may be available on your campus, or is usually about $5.00 per hour
Amusment parks adminission can be from $17.00 for local to $50 or higher for Disney.
Music Cd's $15 Dvds $20 (but you need a tv and player to watch)
TV = $200 for okay, pretty small, DVD player = $50.
Many schools have events to help entertain their students including free music concerts etc. Otherwise concert tickets can range from $25 to $200 for special shows.
You can also take advantage of the public parks with some rather inexpensive equipment from the sports store, like a basket ball for $20.
Most people expect students to live fairly cheaply. Many don't even own cars. If you buy a car a good used car is about $5,000. But many cities have excellent public transit systems. Talk to a school counsilor about transportation in your area.
Good luck, I hope you enjoy your time in our country.

well as an estimate....lets say:
you get an apartment...cheap 1 bedroom apartments are...say $600 (monthly) not including utilities...well say another $150(monthly) for utilities,
then you gotta have food...we'll say....$150 for food...Im assuming you have your own form of transportation so...then you gotta have gas and I am also gonna assume that you have a non gas guzler...so we will say at the least a $100 then we will just hope you wont need any work done to your vehicle....so all in all...honestly, I would say that $15000....will get you moved down here...but it definetly wont be enough to move and live...welfarely. Cus I didnt even add how much it would take to get your butt in college...so good luck homie!

You'll need more than the average American, depending on how long you will be in the U.S.
If you plan on staying for a year or more, I would suggest adding another $15,000 - $20,000 to the kitty to ensure financial security while you're here. Prices are sky-high and continue to rise.
Note: Don't let ANYONE know how much money you have while you're here...

Rent in the US runs about $500 a month, so you'll need a roommate. If you forgo owning a car and bike to school, you should be OK.
